Groningen’s inner city is facing increasing pressure due to urban growth. This calls for smarter densification, better public spaces, and a healthier, more sustainable environment for diverse users—residents, visitors, cyclists, and pedestrians—while preserving open space and historical character.

The city’s rich historical layers are fading. The challenge is to integrate heritage into future planning by balancing preservation, transformation, and new development. This “Atlas” initiates a spatial exploration to connect urban policy with on-the-ground reality through data, mapping, and analysis.

Next steps include policy testing, stakeholder input, and building a transformation toolbox. Key themes like sustainability, diversity, and connectivity will shape future strategies. Past planning lessons and current spatial insights together form the basis for Groningen’s long-term urban vision.
