The Atelier Toekomst NL 2100 project addresses the pressing spatial challenges that the Netherlands faces, ranging from housing and mobility to climate adaptation and biodiversity restoration. Through this initiative, MVRDV, in collaboration with Platform Ontwerp NL, envisions transformative pathways for a sustainable and resilient future.
By leveraging spatial design's power of imagination and reasoning, the project explores a matrix of "what-if" scenarios for 2100. The design investigations focus on urban possibilities in sandy and peat soils, aiming to visualize and evaluate diverse future scenarios as a foundation for informed decision-making.
Key principles include reducing ecological footprints, fostering symbiosis with water and land, prioritizing adaptive reuse of existing structures, and concentrating new developments within urban cores. Public engagement and future-oriented thinking are central to building the collective support necessary for these transitions. This design exploration aspires to spark innovative solutions and inspire broader conversations about the Netherlands' sustainable future.
